As some aspects of our lives that we have taken for granted slowly resume, we thought we would let you know what has been happening at Smoyd Potato Farm for the last several weeks. Of the three potato varieties that we grew in 2019, Rochdale Gold was the largest in terms of volume. When the changes to everyone’s lives started to become a reality due to the Covid-19 pandemic the demand for fresh potatoes increased dramatically. The call to restock your neighbourhood grocery and big box stores was urgent as most families increased the number of homecooked meals. You may have noticed short supply and purchase limits at your local store while farmers and packers ramped up to meet the demand.
So, for a relatively small farm such as Smoyd, grading and shipping thousands of kilograms of Rochdale Gold potatoes was an easy way for two people to maintain physical distance and to stay on the farm.
Smoyd is thankful to work with partners who have the same goal, providing nutritious food for you. From our farm, Brain Kurtz Trucking

who washed and packed them and supplied your local store. You may well have eaten Rochdale’s for dinner recently. One of the truck drivers said as he drove away with 26,000 kgs “real Canadian food from real Canadian farmers!”
With uncertainty in just about everything this year, we are not alone wondering how farming will be further affected. We would like to thank everyone who purchases our potatoes and supports the Ontario potato industry.
